15 drug peddlers’ properties worth crores attached in 1 yr

Cracking a whip on smugglers in the past one year since the launch of a concerted drive against drug traffickers, the police have seized the properties of 15 drug peddlers in the border belt of Amritsar so far.

The police have sent 18 cases of property attachment worth Rs 5.76 crores belonging to 19 smugglers to the competent authorities in Delhi. Three cases of property attachment of four smugglers worth Rs 26 lakh are still pending with it. These cases have been registered under different sections of Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in different police stations in the rural belt.

As per the data of property attachment of drug smugglers procured by this correspondent, this is the second highest property attachment cases of traffickers in the past one decade. In 2011, the police had attached properties worth Rs 6.6 crore of 18 smugglers in 11 cases while three cases were not confirmed by the competent authorities. It had sent 14 cases of 21 smugglers for the same. In 2017, the police sent only two cases of property attachment of several smugglers which are still pending. These properties are worth Rs 14.76 lakh.

In 2007, it had attached properties worth Rs 3.7 crore acquired by four smugglers through illicit trade of drug trafficking.

Majority of these properties include agricultural chunks of land and residential buildings constructed by the smugglers.

The Punjab government had approved a draft last year enabling the police authorities to attach, seize and forfeit the properties of repeat offenders booked under the NDPS Act. It also decided to attach the properties of proclaimed offenders in NDPS cases.

Parampal Singh, Senior Superintedent of Police, Amritsar rural, said the police were also preparing a list of more offenders which would be forwarded to competent authorities for seizing their properties.

The rural police has in past six months arrested 898 drug peddlers in 828 cases and confiscated 2.78 kg of heroin, 13.42 kg of narcotic powder, over 18 lakh intoxicating tablets and nine kg of poppy husk. The police have sent 437 drug addicts to de-addiction centres. So far, 1,412 addicts have been treated by OOAT centres.

The rural police has in the past six months arrested 898 drug peddlers in 828 cases and confiscated 2.78 kg of heroin, 13.42 kg of narcotic powder, over 18 lakh intoxicating tablets and nine kg of poppy husk. The police have sent 437 drug addicts to de-addiction centres. So far, 1,412 addicts have been treated by OOAT centres.
