Thirteen BSF personnel, who were going to participate in a marathon, were injured when their minibus overturned after being hit by a recklessly-driven Skoda car at the Sector 8/9/17/18 light point this morning. The Skoda driver escaped from the spot, leaving the vehicle behind.

Police officials said the BSF personnel were heading towards the Chandigarh Club from where the marathon, organised by a bank, was to be flagged off.

Sources said the Skoda car hit the rear door of the BSF vehicle following which it overturned. The Skoda car was also badly damaged.

Passersby rushed to the rescue of the personnel. The police were informed about the accident. All injured were rushed to Government Multi-Specialty Hospital (GMSH), Sector 16.

The police said while 12 personnel were discharged after first aid, another one, Satyawan, who had more injuries, was admitted to the hospital as he suffered a serious back injury.

“The vehicle is owned by a Sector 33 resident, who is absconding,” said a police official. Meanwhile, the police have impounded both vehicles and a case under Sections 279 (rash driving) and 337 (causing hurt by an act endangering the life or personal safety of others) of the IPC has been registered against the Skoda driver at the Sector 3 police station. A total of 22 BSP personnel, including 10 women, were travelling by the Swaraj Mazda minibus, which was being driven by BSF constable Mridu Chatia.
