SONEPAT, APRIL 22

Additional Sessions Judge DN Bhardwaj sentenced criminal Devender, alias Leelu, a resident of Kami village in the district, to 10 years of imprisonment along with a fine of Rs70,000 on Monday. He had earlier been sentenced to life imprisonment in two murder cases.

Leelu was convicted of a murderous assault on a police team on November 12, 2012.

On a tip-off, the police had laid a trap to nab Leelu. When his car was signalled to stop, he fired at the police. However, the police overpowered him and his accomplices, and recovered Rs28 lakh from them. Leelu had kidnapped the son of a Gurugram businessman on November 3, 2012, and reportedly extorted Rs37 lakh from him. — TNS
