The city police have nabbed a robber who tried to loot two women inside an ATM booth of Corporation Bank in Jandiala when they were withdrawing cash. He has been identified as Rahul Arora, a resident of Patel Nagar.
Initially, he fled the scene after breaking the glass door of the ATM booth only to be arrested later. During interrogation, he confessed to have committed snatchings in the rural belt in the recent past.
According to information, Robinpreet Kaur, along with her friend, had come to Jandiala Guru for shopping for a marriage function. She entered the ATM booth for cash withdrawal when a youth with covered face turned up. According to her, he took out a pistol and threatened that he would shoot them if they didn’t give him their gold jewellery. She said the accused was under the influence of drugs and was not in a position to fire a gunshot.
In the meantime, bank authorities, who were watching live CCTV footage of the ATM booth, immediately informed the security guard who locked the booth from outside and also lowered the shutter. The police were informed. Sensing that he was trapped, he desperately tried to open the glass door. Failing, he broke it and fled away. The CCTV footage of the incident and his subsequent arrest went viral on the social media.
Malkit Singh, security guard, informed the police that the accused snatched Rs 1,100 from him before escaping. A PCR team chased and arrested him.
Parampal Singh, Senior Superintendent of Police, Amritsar rural, said a case under Section 379-B (2) of the IPC and 25, 54, 59 of the Arms Act was registered against him. During probe, he confessed that he had committed three more snatchings, including one near Jandiala Guru Toll plaza a few days ago. He was brought on police remand and further investigation is under way.
