Gang of ATM robbers busted

JALANDHAR: In a major catch, the city police today busted a gang of automated teller machine (ATM) robbers and arrested Shamsher Singh Shera, Dharminder Singh Dhami and Devinder Singh who were accused of trying to break open around 12 ATMs of various banks with gas-cutters in Amritsar, Gurdaspur and Jalandhar, respectively.

In a major catch, the city police today busted a gang of automated teller machine (ATM) robbers and arrested Shamsher Singh Shera, Dharminder Singh Dhami and Devinder Singh who were accused of trying to break open around 12 ATMs of various banks with gas-cutters in Amritsar, Gurdaspur and Jalandhar, respectively.

While the police arrested three accused, the main kingpin Nirmal Singh, alias Nimma, a resident of Kapur Nagar in Amritsar, managed to flee from the place when policemen tried to stop their car at a check-post in the police station division 1 area.

Addressing a press conference, Deputy Commissioner of Police Rajinder Singh said the gang had looted Rs 6 lakh and Rs 12 lakh, respectively, from two ATMs in Amritsar and also took away Rs 4 lakh from an ATM in Jalandhar. He said the robbers were nabbed by a team of officials, including ACP PCR Jasveer Singh Rai and inspector Inder Jeet Singh, in charge, special staff.

The police recovered Rs 5.5 lakh, a motorcycle, a car and 30 smart phones that the robbers had stolen from Lawrence Road in Amritsar. The police also recovered two local-made pistols with four bullets and a gas-cutter machine from them.

The police later produced them in court and took them on police remand after filing a case under Sections 457, 380, 427 and 511 of the IPC against them.
