The Department of Defence and National Security Studies, Panjab University, organised a special lecture on ‘United Nations Peacekeeping Missions’ by Lt Gen Iqbal Singh here today.
Iqbal Singh, who was a part of the peacekeeping operations in Syria from 2012 to 2015, started the lecture with the definition of peacekeeping. He said: “Peacekeeping refers to activities intended to create conditions that favour lasting peace. United Nation peacekeepers give security and peace-building support to help countries make transition from conflict to peace.”
He discussed peacekeeping operations, peace enforcement and post-conflict reconstruction and mandatory laws related to peacekeeping by the United Nation and challenges.
He said peacekeeping operations are deployed on the basis of mandates from the UNSC. About post-conflict reconstruction, he said it was intended at developing economic and social cooperation meant to mend relations between countries.
