A large number of people attended the ‘maha aarti’ on the banks of the Beas at Nature Park here today.

Forests, Transport, Youth Services and Sports Minister Govind Singh Thakur was the chief guest.He lighted a diya and performed ‘puja’ on the banks of the river.

Addressing a gathering, the minister said more such events would be organised to spread a message on the need for the protection of rivers. Kullu Deputy Commissioner Yunus was also present.

The ‘aarti’ was performed by 121 pandits. The diyas were made of ‘atta’ (wheat flour) so that the acquatic life could feed on it and they degenerate. However, some people also immersed earthen diyas. The administration had made elaborate arrangements for the event. The event was held for the first time in the district. Earlier, Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur was to preside over the event, but he could not come. However, Thakur is likely to visit Manali tomorrow to inaugurate the winter carnival. — OC
