Dr Harinder Singh Bedi, director of cardiology, during a press conference at Ivy Hospital on Saturday said: “Heart diseases have reached at an alarming epidemic proportions in the country. According to the WHO, there are 50 million heart patients in India and it will soon double to 100 million.” He said the country was now the diabetes capital of the world. Around 50 percent of bypass surgery patients are diabetics. They constitute a difficult subset as they have a higher propensity for complications. — OC
