Visakhapatnam, October 3

Featuring in only his fifth Test match, Mayank Agarwal became the fourth Indian batsman to convert his maiden century into a double hundred and the Karnataka opener is elated over his performance. Speaking after the match, a delighted Agarwal said: “I am extremely happy. It is a feeling I can’t describe. Glad that I could make my maiden hundred into a double.”

“I am happy with the way I played, I am batting well and if we can keep batting together like this upfront, it will be great for the team,” he added. “If Rohit and I can keep contributing to make 450-500 every time, it will be very tough for the opposition. I would be lying if I say that you only have to think about your own game. At times, you feel that you are playing well and can take a chance, but that’s not how it works. You have to be patient. We had a great partnership to lay the foundation and get to 300 runs.”

Agarwal also praised Rohit’s 176-run knock as the Mumbai right-hander silenced all his critics who had questioned his role as a Test opener. “The way he (Rohit) dominated the spinners was great to see,” Agarwal said. “Initially, the pitch did do a bit with the new ball but when the sun came out, it got better and better. As we approached lunch on Day 2, the ball started keeping low. It started spinning by tea and it is great signs for us.”

Didn’t bow badly, Rohit and Agarwal were good: Maharaj

South African spinners did not bowl badly and it was the sheer brilliance of Rohit Sharma and Mayank Agarwal that has taken the game away from the visitors, lead Proteas spinner Keshav Maharaj said. “I wouldn’t say they bowled poorly. I personally judge if someone comes down the wicket and hits you, it’s not a bad ball. If you are getting hit from the crease, if you are getting cut, then it’s a different story,” said Maharaj. “Piedt was unlucky. Mayank played superbly well and so did Rohit. Literally everything they wanted to do paid off, it was their day,” he said.India won the toss and had no hesitation in batting first. “I suppose the toss does play a part because you want the best possible conditions to bowl for the spinners but having said that, we could have been a little bit better at times when we did bowl. But I suppose the toss does play a large factor in terms of the outcome of the game,” said Maharaj. — Agencies
