Washington DC, August 21

In yet another case of social media wrongly influencing teens, a 12-year-old girl from Michigan's Detroit was hospitalised with severe burns after taking part in the 'fire challenge.'

The girl's mother, Brandi Owens, told Fox that her daughter Timiyah Landers was with two of her friends when she was 'engulfed in flames' after mimicking a video she saw on YouTube. Owens then heard an explosion following which her daughter started running around with fire from her hair to knees.

After dousing the flames, Timiyah was rushed to the hospital where the doctors informed that forty-nine percent of her body was burned.

The 12-year-old's friends admitted that they were participating in the 'fire challenge', an internet trend which refers to the application of flammable liquids on one's body and then setting the liquids aflame, while a video is recorded.

In a similar incident that took place last month, a 15-year-old boy suffered second-degree burns after his friends allegedly poured boiling hot water on him in a bid to complete another internet challenge called the 'Hot Water Challenge'. — ANI.
